Her main goal going to Belgium was an attempt on Florence Griffith Joyner’s world 200m record [21.34] set in 1998, but Shericka Jackson ended up breaking a Diamond League record instead [21.48] on Friday in Brussels.
Running from lane six, Jackson was not as smooth as she would have liked in the first 70 metres of the race but recovered well in the straight and sprinted away to stop the clock in 21.48 seconds in a slight tailwind of 0.2 metres per second.
Bahamian Anthonique Strachan closed fast to take second in 22.31 seconds, with American Jenna Prandini [22.47s] finishing third.
The previous Meet Record of 21.64 seconds was set by another Jamaican stalwart – Merlene Ottey back in 1991.
“I definitely feel like I’m getting there, closer to that record,” said Jackson.
“But it’s also important to have some fun and I really had fun tonight.”
