Australian sprinter Torrie Lewis upsets Sha’ Carri Richardson in China

Little known Queensland sprinter – Torrie Lewis became the news in China on Saturday, April 20 after beaten world 100m champion – Sha’Carri Richardson to win the women’s 200m at the Diamond League in Xiamen.

The 19-year-old Queenslander [Lewis] who was marking her first ever Diamond League appearance pipped Sha’Carri Richardson to victory from lane nine with a time of 22.96 [-0.4].

The American [Richardson] who was the favourite had to settle for second with 22.99 seconds while fellow American ,Tamara Clark ran 23.01 to finish third.

Born in Nottingham, England to a father of Jamaican/ Indian descent and a mother of Scottish descent, Torrie Lewis moved to Australia at age 6. She was a promising gymnast in her early years in Newcastle, New South Wales but later turned her attention to the tracks.

Meanwhile, the men’s 100m went to 2019 world champion – Christian Coleman who coasted to victory in 10.13 [-0.6].

2022 world champion – Fred Kerley [10.17] came second and Jamaican Ackeem Blake [10.20] finished third.
